TPS Extended for Haitians
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) allows individuals from certain designated countries to remain in the United States when certain conditions in that country prevent them from returning to their home safely. Today, the Secretary of DHS (Secretary Jeh Johnson) has indicated that the conditions in Haiti have not improved and has extended TPS for nationals of Haiti for another 18 months (if they meet certain eligibility requirements). The 18 month extension period is from July 23, 2014 to January 22, 2016.
To extend the TPS, Haitians must re-register during the 60 day re-registration period which runs from March 3, 2014 to May 2, 2014. Along with extending the TPS, individuals from Haiti may also renew their employment authorization documents (EAD) which allows them to have work authorization in the U.S.
